Project Location: Peace River, BC

Disciplines: Civil, Structural, Mechanical
Keywords: Power Generation, Penstock, Hydro
Status: Completed

EnFlux Engineering Ltd. was mandated to review the project specifications for construction and analyze the effects of relaxing tight construction tolerances to improve schedule without compromising the quality of the project. EnFlux performed detailed analytical and numerical modeling to present the effects of relaxed tolerances on structures, including 10.5 m diameter penstock and temporary steel support. The study was completed in the beginning of 2021 and the requested changes to the specifications were accepted by BC Hydro and Owner’s Engineer.

Highlights

= Analytical and numerical modeling (using ANSYS) for stress distrubition on penstock shell due to construction loading,
= Effects of relaxed tolerances on stress distribution on penstock shell and verification of conformance to project design basis,
= Reporting and presentation of findings to BC Hydro and Owner’s Engineer, and
= Tolerances were revised to recommended values to improve construction schedule without compromising the quality of the end product.
